early winter warmth

Blue skies, grey landscapes, cozy surroundings.

live. bake. paint.

Leah Rosenberg is a painter who bakes. Or maybe she's a baker who paints. Either way you slice it, she is an artist & pastry chef, both pursuits interwoven & informing each other in their artistry. Working as the pastry chef for SFMoMA's Blue Bottle coffee bar, her pastries are inspired by pieces in the Museum's permanent collection or a work in a current exhibition. While in graduate school for painting, Rosenberg, while taking a cake decorating class, began noticing the response from fellow students when she brought her cakes to class for critiques. This lead to a question, can paintings be generous?, the resulting ideas surrounding consumption, judgement & creation inspiring her approach to painting.

Her gracious, light-filled home (that kitchen!) & home studio space seem the perfect laboratories for her creative processes, both edible & visual.

This past crisp, fall weekend found us stacking wood with a friend under a rain of colorful leaves & a brilliant blue sky. There's nothing more satisfying than a sturdy & artful pile of wood glimpsed from your kitchen window, & even moreso a stylish stack on hand by the fireplace. We followed up our fall workout with apple crisp made from heirloom apples we receive weekly from our local CSA. Autumn in New England can't be beat.

There's a distinct chill in the air, which makes me turn my eye toward cozy interiors. I have always been keen on exposed beams, & as of late raw wood paired with wintry whites has caught my fancy. Add simple, modern shapes & cool, serene colors occasionally punctuated with warm, vibrant pops, & I've found my dream interior winter wonderland: simple, sophisticated & inviting. On top of that, a pot of tea, knitting, an open fire & a single malt will do me just fine, thank you. Happy hibernating...

drawing rooms

From the cave paintings of La Grotte de Lascaux, to the abundance of frescoes that burgeoned in monasteries & cathedrals during the Renaissance, to Jean Cocteau's murals in La Villa Santo Sospir and Chapelle Saint Blaise des Simples, to modern conceptual drawings by Sol Lewitt & beyond, humans have over the years transformed their ceremonial, public & living spaces by incorporating artwork into the very structure of the space itself.

I'm very taken with these simple & graceful drawings by the mysterious contemporary poet, L.P. Promenheur. The undulating lines & natural forms bring the outside in, creating intimate spaces that are a personal blend of art, iconography, architecture & the outdoors.
